Dyslexia is a specific learning difference that affects how the brain processes written language. It’s neurological in origin, meaning it’s based in brain structure and function, not intelligence or effort. In fact, many individuals with dyslexia are highly creative, intuitive, and intelligent thinkers.

Does my child need a dyslexia diagnosis to work with you?

Dyslexia is a specific learning difference that affects how the brain processes written language. It’s neurological in origin and has nothing to do with intelligence- in fact, many individuals with dyslexia are highly creative and intelligent. Children with dyslexia may struggle with reading accuracy, fluency, spelling, and decoding words, but with the right support using evidence-based structured dyslexia therapy, they can become capable and confident readers. Dyslexia is lifelong, but with proper interventions, your child can absolutely thrive. Learn more about dyslexia here.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia therapy is specialized, intensive instruction that follows guidelines set by the International Dyslexia Association. It’s explicit, systematic, multisensory, and diagnostic- designed to rewire how your child’s brain processes language. Unlike general tutoring, which may focus on homework help or grade-level content, dyslexia therapy targets the root of your child’s reading struggles by building foundational skills in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. It’s not a quick fix- it’s a transformation process that creates lasting change in how your child reads.

What is dyslexia therapy, and how is it different from tutoring?

No, I cannot formally diagnose dyslexia- that requires a comprehensive psychoeducational evaluation conducted by a licensed psychologist. However, I can conduct a comprehensive literacy screening to identify a profile consistent with dyslexia. If a formal diagnosis is needed for school accommodations or other purposes, I can provide referrals to qualified professionals and guide you through that process.

Can you diagnose dyslexia?

I only use evidence-based Orton-Gillingham programs aligned with International Dyslexia Association guidelines, including Scottish Rite methodologies such as BUILD, Take Flight, Rite Flight, and JET. These programs are suitable for children ages 5-18. I also incorporate other research-backed curricula as appropriate to meet your child’s unique learning profile. Each program is multisensory, systematic, explicit, and tailored to your child’s specific needs, strengths, and areas for growth.

What curriculum do you use?

The initial screening is a quick assessment conducted during your first consultation to identify your child’s current reading skills. This screening is required for all new families and provides immediate results and recommendations.

The comprehensive literacy evaluation is a much more in-depth process utilizing standardized norm-referenced assessments to provide a detailed analysis of your child’s reading profile. This may include tools such as the Slosson Intelligence Test, Gray Oral Reading Test (GORT), Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing (CTOPP), Phonological Awareness Test (PAT-2), Test of Word Reading Efficiency (TOWRE), and the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (WIAT). This comprehensive evaluation identifies specific strengths and weaknesses across all areas of literacy and provides the data needed to create a highly individualized therapy plan. It’s ideal for families seeking a thorough understanding of their child’s reading challenges or who need detailed documentation for school accommodations.

What’s the difference between the initial screening and comprehensive literacy evaluation?

Your initial consultation begins with a parent intake where we’ll discuss your child’s developmental history, reading challenges, school experiences, and your goals for therapy. This conversation helps me understand your child’s complete picture- not just their academic struggles, but also their strengths, interests, and how reading difficulties may be affecting their confidence and daily life. Then, I’ll conduct a literacy screening with your child to assess your child’s current reading skills and identify specific areas of need. You’ll receive immediate results and recommendations, so you’ll leave with a clear understanding of where your child is what support they need. We’ll discuss next steps and create a plan tailored to your child’s unique learning profile. This is also your opportunity to ask questions about dyslexia therapy, my approach, and what the process will look like for your family. My goal is for you to feel leaving informed, supported, and confident about the path forward.

What should I expect at the initial consultation?

Each therapy session is 50 minutes of one-on-one instruction tailored to your child's specific needs and learning goals.  Sessions are multisensory and systematic, focusing on building skills in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, spelling, and written expression. We end each session with a five minute family recap where I share what we worked on that day. We celebrate progress, give your child  a chance to show what they learned (trust me, your child will love this part), and provide any suggestions for supporting your child at home.  This ensures you are always informed and involved in your child's reading journey.

What does a typical therapy session look like?

Two sessions per week are required, and three sessions per week are recommended for optimal progress. Research shows that this consistent frequency provides the intensity and repetition needed to rewire how the brain processes language and creates lasting change in your child’s reading skills. Sessions can be in-person, virtual, or a hybrid combination to meet your family’s needs.

How often will my child need to attend sessions?

Dyslexia therapy is a meaningful investment in your child’s future, typically spanning one to two years of consistent work. While every child’s journey is unique, this timeframe allows us to systematically build the foundational skills needed for confident, independent reading. The transformation we’re creating isn’t a quick fix.  It’s rewiring how your child’s brain processes language, and that takes time, patience, and commitment. The skills your child develops through this process will serve them for a lifetime.

How long does dyslexia therapy usually take?

Family advocacy means I’m in your corner as you navigate the educational system. This can include helping you understand your child’s rights, reviewing IEP or 504 documents, coaching you before meetings, attending IEP or 504 meetings with you, and ensuring your child receives the accommodations and support they’re entitled to. As a former IEP case manager and a mom who has navigated this process myself, I know how overwhelming it can feel. You don’t have to figure it out alone- I’m here to guide you, support you, and advocate alongside you for your child’s needs.

What does family advocacy include?

I work with students ages 5-18, providing specialized dyslexia therapy and literacy tutoring tailored to each developmental stage. Whether your child is just beginning to learn to read or is a teenager struggling with more complex text, I have the expertise and programs to meet them where they are and help them build the skills they need to succeed.

What ages do you work with?

I offer both in-person and virtual sessions to meet the needs of families in Douglas County and beyond. In-person sessions take place at my at-home classroom in Parker, while virtual sessions allow us to work together from the comfort of your home. Both formats provide high-quality, evidence-based intervention tailored to your child’s learning needs.

Do you offer in-person or virtual services?

Progress is carefully tracked throughout your child’s therapy or tutoring journey. You’ll receive monthly typed progress reports that detail what we’ve been working on, the skills your child has mastered, areas of growth, and next steps. These check-ins ensure you’re always informed about your child’s development and can see the transformation happening. Additionally, during our 5-minute family recaps at the end of each session, I share immediate feedback and updates on what we accomplished that day and celebrate wins along the way.

How do you measure progress?
